ALAN MINTER

Alan Minter began his career at the age of 21, in 1972. In his first professional bout he beat Maurice Thomas by a knockout in the 6th round. Alan went on to win five fights in a row by knockout & in 1973, Pat Dwyer became the first boxer to go the distance with him - over eight rounds in London. Alan won his next five fights, three by knockout, however defeat for the first time followed by a knockout to King George Aido. Two more wins followed that & then he faced Jan Magziarz, who beat him twice in a row by knockout.

In 1974, Alan beat Tony Byrne by decision, lost by a knockout to Ricky Torres, had a third fight with Magziarz resulting in a no contest in four rounds & he finished the year with a win in his first international fight against Shako Mamba in Hamburg, Germany.

In 1975, Alan won four fights in a row including another bout in Hamburg & by the end of the year he'd beaten Kevin Finnegan for the British Middleweight title. 1977 saw him win the European Middleweight title by beating Germano Valsecchi by a knockout in Italy. In 1978, Alan won all three of his bouts including his first bout in the USA.

1979, Alan won all four of his fights, two of them by knockout & in 1980 on 16th March he was finally given the opportunity of a shot at Champion Vito Antuofermo's World Middleweight title at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas. He won the title by a 15 round decision & in a re-match he retained the World Title by a knockout in eight rounds.

Alan's run as World Champion came to an end on 27th September of that year when he lost by a knockout to Marvin Hagler at Wembley Arena. Alan beat contender Ernie Singletary in London in 1981 but after losses to future Hagler challengers Mustafa Hamsho & Tony Sibson both also in London, he retired for good.

He left boxing with a record of 39 wins, 9 losses & 1 no contest, with 23 wins by knockout.
