FRANK McLINTOCK MBE |
Frank McLintock started his career at Leicester City, making his debut in 1959. He spent seven seasons at Filbert Street, reaching two FA Cup finals (1961 & 1963) & one League Cup final (1964) but was on the losing side on all three occasions.
A classy, elegant midfield player with a crowd pleasing 'never-say-die' spirit, he was signed by Arsenal in October 1964 for £80k & went straight into the first team where he spent the next nine seasons, moving from midfield to centre half. He subsequently became the club's Captain in 1967.
Frank reached another two League Cup finals (losing both, again!) but his luck changed in 1970 as he Captained Arsenal to an Inter-Cities Fairs Cup followed by the club's first League & Cup 'Double' in 1971. Frank led Arsenal to their sixth Wembley final in 1972 (which they lost to Leeds) & second place in the First Division following year, before being sold to Queens Park Rangers in June 1973. He spent four seasons with the Hoops & was part of the side that qualified for the UEFA Cup after finishing a close second to Liverpool in 1976.
He finally retired in 1977. In all, he played over 700 times, including 403 matches for Arsenal; he also won nine caps for Scotland & in 1971, was voted the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year.
He was made an MBE in 1972.
