RICHARD PITMAN

Richard Pitman is a bald, bandy, bespectacled, beaten-up former steeplechase jockey with a meagre 470 winners & 5000 losers to his credit & discredit.

After failing all 9 'O' levels he set off to find fame & fortune in the racing game. After four years & 60 winnerless rides, things improved somewhat with 22 victories in the next three seasons.

Over the following eight seasons Richard rode a further 450 winners including all the big jumping contests except The Cheltenham Gold Cup & The Grand National; second in both events twice including a much replayed Grand National of 1973 when caught in the last two strides by the legendary Red Rum.

Richard retired to join the BBC television racing team in 1976 & is still very much a part of it today. He has appeared on various other programmes as well as a feature shown in 10,500 betting shops throughout the UK.

As well as his broadcasting credits, Richard has also written six novels, five non-fiction books & runs a stud in Oxon.
