After Dinner Speaker / TV Personality
Tim Hogarth is an antique dealer who appears regularly on TV programmes including; Secret Dealers and Dickinsons Real Deal. He is an accomplished witty after dinner speaker, auctioneer and charity patron and has the gift of the gab to get any crowd on their feet and spending within minutes!
Tim was born in Haworth and from an early age developed a passion for antiques. At the tender age of 8 he progressed to jumble sales and flea markets and subsequently acquired a paper round to fund his expansion into the antiques world. Visiting local charity and junk shops where he became well known as a young collector, Tim would buy books and prayer books as they were plentiful and cheap! One of his prize finds was a prayer book with a hand written letter from Dr. Patrick Bronte which he sold to the Bronte Museum of Haworth for the sum of £200.
As a school student Tim worked for friends and neighbours to earn money to buy antiques and at the age of 16 left school in order to get himself a job so he could save enough money to start his own antiques business. Tim worked briefly in a light bulb factory until he’d managed to save enough money and collected enough antiques to start dealing. Starting with a stall in the Wool Exchange in Bradford, Tim progressed to Leeds and Huddersfield Markets and eventually opened a shop in Haworth.
After two years in his shop, Tim decided to travel to Covent Garden each week and sell various antiques including silver jewellery, textiles, evening bags and shawls. He was a quick learner and very aware of how much money is in antiques as he would regularly sell out! With this in mind, he added Bermondsey Road and Portobello Road to his portfolio.
He also visited the monthly antiques fair at the Royal Horticultural Hall (London’s longest running monthly antique fair) which was known as an upmarket event where he became very popular selling to other traders and dealers as well as ‘ordinary’ customers including Paul Smith, Princess Margaret, Raine Spencer & Valentino!
Tim met his future wife, Nicola in 1994 also doing antiques fairs in London and they worked very well together. Their chosen antiques were similar and both knew exactly what was ‘hot’ and what was not! Together Nicola and Tim opened an antique shop in Haworth on the Main Street which turned into a great enterprise as they ended up buying the adjacent shop and expanding the business.
Not content with a new, bigger antiques shop or the London markets both Tim and Nicola visited Budapest on many occasions finding beautifully decorated items which fitted a particular interior design style. Some of the items brought back from Budapest were sold to Colefax and Fowler, Nina Campbell and also Ralph Lauren as well as Cath Kidston before she was famous!
In 2006 Tim decided that he would do something that would change his life. He answered an advertisement for a new television programme, Dickinson’s Real Deal. After only a couple of meetings Tim was hired for the show and as they say, the rest is history!
Tim runs many established businesses throughout Yorkshire and surrounding areas and is continuing his TV career in addition to being an excellent after dinner speaker.
