Dickie Bird is the most famous cricket umpire in the world and one of the game’s greatest characters. His enormous contribution to cricket was recognised in July 1986 when he was awarded the MBE. He has umpired all the major domestic and international contests including the first three Finals of the World Cup. He was also one of the select group of international umpires at the fourth World Cup in India and Pakistan in 1987. At Lord’s in May 1988, he reached a personal milestone by standing in his hundredth international match.
In addition to his achievement on the field of play Dickie Bird is also the author of “Not Out”, “That’s Out” and more recently his third collection of memoirs and cricket anecdotes “From the Pavilion End”. In his own inimitable style, Dickie describes the various misfortunes that befall him – whether it is dealing with recalcitrant fast bowlers and petulant batsmen, or even dubious dentists and peacocks in the back garden.
“Dickie Bird – The Autobiography” has currently sold in excess of 1 million hardback and paperback copies world-wide making it the best-selling sports book of all time!! His eagerly awaited follow-up “White Cap and Bails” will be published in the Autumn. Dickie’s video, “A Bird’s Eye View of Cricket” was an instant hit and a new video will be released shortly.
In addition to his recollections from out in the middle, Dickie has gathered together a selection of amusing tales from Yorkshire and beyond – recalling such sporting phenomena as Geoff Boycott’s running between the wickets, Fred Trueman’s fast pace (not only through the air but down the motorway!) and Phil Sharpe’s penchant for depositing slip catches in his trouser pocket to the consternation of his victims.
His quintessential British style and rich source of sporting anecdotes has made him much in demand as a speaker. From underneath the peak of his famous white cap, Dickie Bird is an astute observer of the cricket scene while his wry observations about the game and its exponents will delight cricket lovers everywhere.
