In a career spanning 20 years, Craig Heap won 14 British Championship titles, competed in 5 European, 5 World Championships & an Olympic Games. In 1998 he became the first person in history to captain England to Gold at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and did the same again four years later in the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games.
Despite breaking his hand in two places seven weeks prior, Craig fulfilled his childhood dream of competing at the Olympic Games, achieving a Personal Best in the All Around final of the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Craig was the only male gymnast to be selected to represent Great Britain at these Olympic Games. In the same year he won BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year award (British Olympic & Paralympic Teams).
Since retiring from competition in 2002, Craig is still involved with gymnastics and is a qualified High Performance men’s gymnastics coach.
He has commentated on gymnastics for BBC Radio 5Live and BBC Sport covering World Championships, Commonwealth and the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics. He also works as an athlete mentor for the Youth Sport Trust, Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, Sporting Champions, SportMakers Ambassador, Creating Excellence, Inspired Exchange, Keynote Educational, Raise the Bar, 21st Century Legacy and Street Games. Craig was also a Judge on BBC 1’s Saturday night gymnastics entertainment show Tumble in the summer of 2014.
