Dean Richards is a former Rugby Union player winning 48 England caps and 6 for the British Lions.
He was born in Nuneaton, Warwickshire & attended John Cleveland College in Hinckley before venturing to France to play for Roanne. He joined the Tigers & made his debut at Neath in 1982. Within a year he was back in the principality again, this time on tour with the Barbarians.
His England debut followed in March 1986 against Ireland at Twickenham where he became the first forward in 57 years to score two tries on an England debut. Dean went on to play in nine Five Nations tournaments including three Grand Slams (91, 92 & 95) plus a further Five Nations Championship wins in 1996.
He twice toured with the British Lions to Australian in 1989 and to New Zealand four years later playing in all three tests on each tour & skippering them to victory against Australia B in 1989 & Canterbury in 1993. England’s most-capped No. 8, Dean was one of only two Leicester representatives, along with Rory Underwood, to play in the inaugural World Cup competition in 1987 & also appeared in the following two RWC campaigns in 1991 & 1995.
Dean captained Leicester in two separate spells, 1990-91 & 1993-97. At the Leicester-Barbarians game at Christmas ’95 he became only the second Tigers forward to score 100 tries for the club, the other being David Matthews. He has also been involved in all Leicester’s league wins, as a player in ’88 as captain in ’95 & as Director of Rugby for the four consecutive Premiership titles 1992-2002 and back to back Heineken Cup victories of 2001 & 2002.
He left the Tigers in 2004 becoming coach at Grenoble in France.
Dean was appointed the Director of Rugby at Harlequins from 1st July 2005, leading them back to the Premiership at the first attempt. They then qualified for Europe for 2008/09.
