Michael Vaughan assured his place in cricket history with England’s historic Ashes victory in 2005 and has gone on to become one of the sport’s most respected commentators.

He had already established himself as a technically fluent and composed batsman of the highest standard when he took over the England Test captaincy from Nasser Hussain in 2003. But for all his outstanding strokeplay, he will be remembered most for capturing the hearts of the nation in leading England to their outstanding 2005 Ashes triumph.

By the time he was given the opportunity to captain his country, Michael had already established himself as a batsman unruffled by the pressures of the situation. That composure was evident throughout his international career whether as a front-line batsman during the early days of his England career or as captain when his calm style of leadership guided his side to two years of almost constant success.

He managed to bring the best out of talents like ISM colleagues Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison and forged a team together who were used to making their own history. They became the first England team in over three decades to win a series in the Caribbean, they won all seven Tests in the summer of 2004, won in South Africa before the ultimate, winning the Ashes for the first time since 1986-7.

Just as Michael and England set their sights on establishing themselves as the No. 1 Test side in the world, injuries disrupted their progress with Michael arguably the biggest casualty to their hopes of building on the Ashes triumph. A succession of knee injuries restricted him to only 18 more Tests in the four years which followed 2005 and ultimately prompted his retirement in 2009.

His appetite for the game has not diminished in retirement and he has forged a successful broadcasting career with BBCs Test Match Special and Channel 5 and his columns in the Telegraph regularly set the agenda. Michael underlined his status as a household name by appearing on BBCs Strictly Come Dancing in 2012.
