Nicholas Owen is a journalist, newsreader and TV presenter.
He is a presenter with BBC News, which he re-joined in February 2007. For well over a decade before that he hosted all of ITN’s major bulletins, including Channel Four News & News at Ten. He has also appeared in a wide range of other TV & radio programmes, including BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2006.
From 1994 to April 2000, Nicholas was the Royal Correspondent for ITV News. He played a major part in the ITV News coverage of the tragic death & funeral coverage of Diana, Princess of Wales & subsequently compiled a book on her life entitled Diana – The People’s Princess.
He also wrote a witty & well-informed ‘Royal Watch’ website column for the predecessor of itv.com/news, giving a unique inside view of the House of Windsor & the latest Royal stories.
During the Gulf War of 1991, Nicholas presented the highly-acclaimed Midnight Special programmes when they were launched on Channel Four.
He was also one of the original presenters of The Parliament Programme, Channel Four’s first daytime political series, at its outset in the late 1980s.
Nicholas Owen joined Channel 4 News from the BBC in 1984 as Business & Economics Correspondent. In 1987 he was a reporter on ITV News’ Budget programme, a role he repeated in many subsequent Budget programmes.
Nicholas began his career on the Surrey Mirror in 1964 before moving to Fleet Street in 1968. He worked successively for the Evening Standard & Daily Telegraph & then spent seven years with the Financial Times.
He then joined the magazine Now in 1979 as Deputy Business Editor, later becoming Business Editor. In 1981 Nicholas switched to television reporting, joining the BBC in the North East of England covering industrial stories for regional & national programmes.
