Ieuan Evans is a former Rugby Union footballer playing in 3 World Cups and Lion tours.
A speedy elusive runner in the best tradition of the great Welsh wingers, Evans made his international debut in 1987 and although he missed the 1989/90 and part of the 1994/95 international seasons due to injury he has won 54 caps to the end of the 1995 World Cup. His appointment as captain for the 1993/94 season did much to revive the flagging fortunes of Welsh Rugby and when he led his country for the 19th time against Spain in 1994 he beat the record set by Arthur Gould in the 1890’s. Evans has captained Wales 27 times and his total of 23 tries is also a Welsh record.
He played in all three tests on the 1989 British Lions Tour of Australia and his try in the third Test following a defensive lapse by David Campese (aus) clinched the series for the tourists. His second Lions tour was to New Zealand in 1993 when he again played in all three Tests. One of the most gifted players in present day rugby he played originally for Carmarthen Quins and then for Llanelli from 1984.
